The Shetland Bus

THE SHETLAND BUS

South-west gales and heavy rain were considered good weather for setting out on the North Sea in small fishing vessels. Then you could get away unseen from land and it was difficult for enemy aircraft to spot the boats in high seas and rain. Many captains went back and forth and the boats eventually became known as the Shetland buses. In the exhibition you can see models of several of the local Shetland boats. You can also hear stories about the captains who led them and you can see the lifeboat from Silva, which we hoisted in through the window at the back of the house.
