NORWEGIAN PEACEKEEPERS IN POSTWAR GERMANY

In the exhibition, which has been built up by veterans from Sogn og Fjordane who participated – through pictures, films and equipment, one will get to know the important history of the war. You will learn about the years when 50,000 young Norwegian soldiers who, after recruit school in Norway, went on a 6 months’ service to Germany for peace. The German brigades started in 1947 and lasted until 1953. Then the brigade in Northern Norway was established to operate as a border guard on the Norwegian-Russian border and Norwegian brigades were no longer to do guard duty in Germany. The German brigades also led to the formation of NATO. On the 4th of April 1949, 12 countries that had brigades in Germany signed a joint military alliance in Washington, and NATO was a fact. Today, 30 countries are members of NATO and Jens Stoltenberg is Secretary General and leader of the defense alliance.
